Looking ahead to the 2024 general election to choose the leaders of our communities, the Korea Daily is announcing endorsements and weighing in on the candidates and propositions.

Since 2020, the Korea Daily has been endorsing candidates from all walks of life through the Candidate Evaluation Committee to ensure that politicians make and follow through on good promises and that ultimately, the votes of Korean American voters will make a difference.

From the candidates who made it through the primary, the Korea Daily selected candidates who have produced meaningful policies and contributed to the Korean American community.

Despite the endorsements, the Korea Daily will continue to provide unbiased coverage.

7. Young Kim, California’s 40th Congressional District

The Korea Daily officially endorses Young Kim, the Republican candidate running for a third term in California’s 40th Congressional District.

Rep. Young Kim

The 40th District spans Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties, encompassing a population of approximately 800,000. Key cities within the district include Anaheim, Corona, Tustin, Yorba Linda, Brea, and Laguna Hills, areas known for significant Korean American communities. The district’s demographic makeup consists of 48% White, 25% Latino, and 19% Asian residents.

Notably, the district’s voters backed Democratic candidates Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election and Joe Biden in 2020, both with majority support. Despite this, Kim won her seat in both 2020 and 2022 and has since served on committees such as the House Financial Services Committee and the Foreign Affairs Committee.

Of particular interest is Kim’s voting record in 2021, where she opposed a resolution challenging the results of the presidential election and certified Joe Biden’s victory. However, she did vote against the second impeachment resolution of President Donald Trump that same year.

Kim’s political career in California began in 2014 when she served in the State Assembly for the 65th District. She was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2020, representing the 39th District, and has since advocated for the Korean American community through various legislative initiatives. She is now positioned to advance as a senior member of Congress.

Her key campaign pledges include job creation, economic empowerment, border security, tax cuts, and strengthened national security. Kim has also promised increased support for veterans.

In her final campaign finance report on October 16, Kim’s campaign reported raising over $8.43 million, significantly outpacing her opponent.
