The Anderson Munger Family YMCA, located at 3rd and Oxford, announced on July 11 that it will initiate a fundraising campaign to provide summer camps for students.
In a press release, YMCA Executive Director Rae Jin stated, “This fundraiser aims to offer summer camps to young students who are often overlooked during the summer due to financial constraints. We encourage everyone to participate and help these children grow by providing them with a variety of experiences.”
YMCA President Chase Campen shared his personal connection, saying, “I have cherished memories of participating in summer programs at the YMCA as a child. We are excited to offer programs for students in the Korean American community that will have a positive impact on their mental and physical health.”
The 2023 Summer Soiree Dinner and Fundraiser Event is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on August 18 at the 3rd Street YMCA. More details, including sponsorships and ticket purchases, can be found at ymcaLA.org/summersoiree.
The goal is to raise $80,000 through the event, which will enable a total of 240 low-income students to attend Big Bear’s summer camps by mid-August, according to Jin.
The funds will cover the students’ expenses to participate in the Big Bear Summer Camp at no cost. The camp began on July 9 and will continue until August 6, offering activities such as hiking, horseback riding, and campfires. The camp is open to ages 7 to 17, and applications can be found at www.ymcala.org/ymca-camping-services/sleep-away-camp.
Furthermore, 3rd Street YMCA is currently offering a “Day Camp” from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. for children ages 5-11. The camp provides various programs, including swimming and crafts.
Jin emphasized, “The YMCA offers a wide range of services, including educational programs and sports activities such as soccer and t-ball. We hope that many students will take advantage of the abundant programs we offer.”
In other news, a new YMCA Program Center (433 Vermont Ave.) will open this year on the first floor of a senior apartment building near Vermont and Fifth streets. The center will focus on senior fitness, offering activities such as indoor table tennis and cardio. It will also introduce new educational programs for youth, including tutoring and technology classes.
