Residents who suffered significant housing losses due to the recent wildfires in Los Angeles County now have an opportunity to apply for emergency financial assistance.

The California Association of Realtors (CAR) announced on February 10 that the Realtors Relief Foundation, established by the National Association of Realtors (NAR), has donated a $1 million relief fund to assist wildfire victims with housing-related financial aid.

Each eligible household may receive up to $1,000 in assistance until the entire $1 million fund is depleted. Funds are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, and affected residents are encouraged to submit applications without delay. The deadline to apply is April 30.

To qualify, applicants must be U.S. citizens or legal residents who have experienced housing damage or require temporary shelter due to the wildfires. Each household is limited to one-time assistance.

According to CAR, the grants are intended to alleviate housing-related financial burdens and may only be used for mortgage payments, temporary housing rent, or hotel cost reimbursements. The funds cannot be applied to home equity loans, personal belongings, appliances, or vehicle repairs.

To apply, individuals must complete an online application and submit documentation verifying wildfire-related damages or evacuation. The submitted documents will be reviewed solely to determine eligibility.

Applicants must provide three key documents: proof of residence, proof of loss, and a copy of a valid ID. Proof of residence can be verified through a mortgage statement, lease agreement, property tax record, grant deed, or utility bill. Proof of loss must include relevant documentation such as an insurance claim, a FEMA report, a third-party repair estimate, an evacuation notice, or a hotel or short-term rental receipt. A valid driver’s license or Real ID is required for identity verification.

CAR stated that processing applications may take up to two to three weeks. Approved applicants will receive an email requesting their current address and payment information.

CAR President Heather Ozur emphasized the importance of this relief effort, noting that “many homes and businesses have been lost in the wake of the wildfire crisis. Our association is committed to supporting community recovery and rebuilding efforts.”

Since its founding in 2001, the Realtors Relief Foundation has provided over $43 million in housing-related assistance to more than 25,000 families affected by disasters nationwide.
