The mother of a daughter with Down Syndrome addresses the doctor who recommended an abortion.
“The quality of life would be lower with a child of Down Syndrome.” Courtney Baker recalls her doctor saying to her, a pregnant and scared mother at the time, during her 12-week ultrasound.
Baker recently wrote a letter to the doctor (whose identity has not been released) detailing her disappointment in the doctor’s inability to be in “perpetual awe” when witnessing the “tiny beating hearts” of new life, regardless of abnormalities.
Emersyn “Emmy” Baker at 15 months currently resides in Florida with her parents Courtney and Matt, and makes up one-third of the Baker sister trio with siblings Rhyan and Evynn, according to ABC 7.
“Emersyn has not only added to our quality of life, she’s touched the hearts of thousands…She’s opened our eyes to true beauty and pure love,” Baker shares in the letter.
Baker’s letter became viral after its initial post on Facebook, catching the attention of various advocate organizations.
Baker concludes the letter with the following wish. “My prayer is when you see that next baby with Down syndrome lovingly tucked in her mother’s womb, you will look at that mommy and see me then tell her the truth: ‘Your child is absolutely perfect.'”
