A free vision screening event, organized by Vision Care Service West (VCS West), an international medical relief organization dedicated to the prevention of blindness, and sponsored by the LA Koreatown Lions Club, took place in the parking lot of the Los Angeles Consulate General on the morning of September 30.
Ophthalmologists Dr. Andrew Cho and Dr. Lisa Hwang, along with Optometrist Dr. Jennifer Kim, volunteered to screen and examine the eyes of more than 70 Korean, Latino, Black, and Indian patients. They also distributed magnifying glasses and eye drops to those in need. A nursing team, including Nurse Melody Park, also conducted blood pressure and diabetes tests. Deputy Consul General Sunghwan Kwon visited the event to provide a tour and offer encouragement.
“About 20 members of the Koreatown Lions Club came out to serve today,” said William Shin, the club’s president. “It’s rewarding to be able to help local residents with their needs. We will continue to sponsor the event and provide eye exams and cataract surgery to those in need.”
Vision Care Service West will also offer free surgery to four patients who are found to have cataracts after the screening. Additionally, the organization will provide customized glasses to six students who cannot afford them due to financial difficulties.
