The Medical Examiner’s Office stated that the cause of Kim’s Death was mechanical asphyxia due to compression of the torso. The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) pronounced Kim dead at the scene at 11:30 a.m. on February 4. He was the sole fatality in the accident.

In response to Korea Daily’s inquiry about which vehicle Kim was in at the time of the crash, the Santa Fe Springs division of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) declined to answer, stating that the exact circumstances of the accident were still under investigation.

However, as the cargo truck that rear-ended the trailer suffered severe damage to the driver’s seat, it is possible that Kim was the driver of the cargo truck.
