The Korea Daily is expanding its presence as a Korean-American news outlet in Dallas, Texas.

The Dallas branch of the Korea Daily published its first print issue on June 21, signaling a new beginning for Korean American media in the city under the leadership of the new CEO, Hyunjoo Kim.

The opening ceremony was held at the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel in Carrollton, a satellite city of Dallas County where the office is located. It was attended by more than 100 local dignitaries, including Korea Daily CEO Yoonho Nahm, Carrollton Mayor Steve Babick, Head of Consulate of the Republic of Korea in Dallas Kwangheon Doh, the Korean Society of Dallas president Sunghan Kim, the Peaceful Unification Advisory Council president Wonsung Oh, the Korean Association of Colorado board chairman Chanin Park, Carrollton Mayor Pro Tem Nancy Cline, and City Councilmember Richard Fleming.

In an opening speech, Korea Daily CEO Yoonho Nahm described the reopening of the Dallas office as highly inspiring.

“One local newspaper is closing every three weeks in the United States, and in eight to ten years, there will be less than 1,000 in the country. It is alarming that in some places, one newspaper will have a monopoly, and in other places, there will be no media at all,” he said, adding, “It is very pleasing to see the launch of the new Korea Daily in Dallas.”

In a welcome speech, Korea Daily Dallas CEO Hyunjoo Kim expressed her confidence in making the newspaper a “community-oriented newspaper that is willing to point out faults but at the same time not stingy with praise.”

“The Korea Daily Dallas will add locally specialized articles and creative content to the newspaper,” Kim said, “and it will grow into a media outlet that develops together with the community.”

“Especially in the immigrant community, local news and personal stories are often not accessible through the internet,” said Kim. “The Korea Daily Dallas is committed to adapting to the new media environment while fulfilling its role as a news outlet for the immigrant community.”

“Based on the experience and principles of running the largest Korean-American newspaper in Colorado for the past 20 years, I will focus on building bigger dreams in Dallas for the next 20 years,” said Kim.

Carrollton Mayor Steve Babick said, “The Korean community contributes greatly to the economic development of the city of Carrollton, and I look forward to seeing the Korea Daily Dallas grow into a media outlet that unites the Korean American community and delivers the information and news they need.”

Sunghan Kim, president of the Korean Society of Dallas, Wonsung Oh, president of the Peaceful Unification Advisory Council, and Chanin Park, board chairman of the Korean Association of Colorado, also congratulated the launch of the Korea Daily Dallas and asked for the support of the attendees.

Following the new launch in Dallas, Kim became a publisher in two states (Texas and Colorado) for the first time in the history of the Korea Daily. Kim completed a master’s degree in journalism at Chung-Ang University in Korea, served as a member of the editorial board of the Press Culture Research Institute, was head of the news coverage department of the Korea Times Denver, and is currently the CEO of the Weekly Focus in Denver and the Korea Daily Denver, and president of the Korean-American Youth Culture Foundation of Colorado.

The Korea Daily’s Dallas branch is located in the heart of Carrollton Koreatown at 1028 Mac Arthur Drive. For more information, call (469) 289-0389.
