The U.S. Embassy and consulates in Mexico have issued a Spring Break Travel Advisory for travelers to Mexico.
In a recent press release, the U.S. Embassy and Consulate General in Mexico urged citizens planning to travel to Mexico for spring break to stay safe and familiarize themselves with the precautions for their destination.
The U.S. Embassy in Mexico estimated that thousands of U.S. citizens would be traveling to Mexico during spring break, which begins in March.
In particular, the U.S. Embassy emphasized that U.S. travelers should avoid high-crime neighborhoods and exercise caution in the downtown areas of Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, and Tulum, especially after dark.
“Unregulated alcohol may be contaminated, and U.S. citizens have reported losing consciousness or becoming injured after consuming alcohol that was possibly tainted.” There have been recent reports of some visitors becoming unconscious or sick after consuming alcohol that was not regulated by Mexican authorities. Some criminals have also targeted citizens traveling alone or in small groups, providing them with drugs and then committing sexual assaults.
