CA Senator Steven Choi Bills Aim to Cut Regulations, Lower Taxes

California State Senator Steven Choi is pushing for legislative changes to reduce regulations and lower taxes. The bills focus on supporting small businesses and revitalizing California’s economy. As he marks his first 100 days in office, he emphasizes the need for balance in the Democrat-controlled state legislature.

A Victory Against the Odds

Nicknamed the “Giant Killer,” Choi secured a surprising win in California’s 37th senatorial district last November. Despite facing Josh Newman, an incumbent with substantial financial backing, Choi triumphed by 6,075 votes. His previous experience as a State Assemblymember, along with strong grassroots support, played a crucial role in his victory.

Challenges in a Democrat-Controlled Legislature

The bills face significant obstacles in the state legislature. Choi argues that Democrats often refuse to cooperate simply because a bill was proposed by a Republican. He pointed to his proposed constitutional amendment to prevent governors from granting clemency to relatives, saying that it is a common-sense measure for political ethics, yet Democratic lawmakers are refusing to support it.

“There needs to be a balance of power,” Choi said. “Democrats must consider whether their policies genuinely benefit residents.” He also raised concerns about tax hikes, reduced sentencing for criminals, and sanctuary city policies for undocumented immigrants, stating that such laws are being passed unilaterally without sufficient debate.

Legislative Strategy and Policy Priorities

To navigate a partisan legislature, Choi aims to introduce bipartisan bills that deliver tangible benefits to residents. He actively engages with Democratic lawmakers to negotiate and persuade them on policy matters.

His primary focus includes economic revitalization. The bills seek to reduce regulations and lower taxes, particularly to support small businesses. “A strong economy ensures thriving businesses and better livelihoods for workers,” he stated.

Criticism of Governor Gavin Newsom

Choi has also criticized Governor Gavin Newsom, arguing that his policies prioritize a future presidential bid over the state’s needs. He pointed to California’s sanctuary policies, wildfire response, and water management issues as examples of failed leadership.

“Allocating $15 million in taxpayer funds to support illegal immigrants is hard to justify,” Choi remarked. He also questioned the state’s handling of major wildfires, calling for improved fire and water management.

Commitment to the Korean American Community

Beyond economic policies, Choi is advocating for initiatives benefiting Korean Americans. He has supported resolutions such as “Korean American Day” and “Yu Gwan-sun Day” while working on legislation to provide direct economic benefits to the community.

A Vision for a Balanced California

Looking ahead, Choi remains committed to restoring balance in the California legislature and increasing voter awareness. “I will work to build a rational and logical California,” he said.
