[Interview with Senator Andy Kim]

“As someone with a deep understanding of Korean Peninsula issues, I can play a key role in strengthening the U.S.-Korea alliance,” said U.S. Senator Andy Kim (D-NJ) during his first interview with the Korea Daily following his swearing-in on December 9.

He dismissed concerns about “conflicts of interest” related to his appointment to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, calling such claims “nonsense and offensive.” He emphasized his readiness to take on an active role in Korea-related matters.

He also attributed the current political situation surrounding martial law and the impeachment process in South Korea to the need for the “prompt restoration of democracy.

Senator Andy Kim

– What was your first Senate vote?
“My first vote as a senator was to confirm a federal judge. This role is unique to the Senate, as we are responsible for confirming Cabinet members, ambassadors, and federal judges. I believe it’s crucial to confirm judges who reflect the diversity of our nation, including Asian Americans and other underrepresented communities.

– Could you tell us about your committee assignments?
“I have been officially assigned to three major Senate committees: Foreign Relations, Banking, and Finance. My previous experience with diplomacy, artificial intelligence, and financial issues during my time in the House of Representatives and at the White House has prepared me well for these roles. I’m ready to leverage that experience to address the challenges before us.”

– Some people say there could be a conflict of interest. How do you respond?
“Absolutely not. I firmly reject the idea that my work on Korea-related issues at the Foreign Relations Committee poses a conflict of interest. Jewish members of Congress handle issues related to Israel, and European-American lawmakers often work on European affairs. My background allows me to serve as a bridge in diplomacy, and I’m committed to using that perspective to strengthen our global relationships.”

– What are your views on U.S. Cabinet picks?
“I’m deeply concerned about the partisanship that’s seeped into the process of selecting Cabinet members. During former President Donald Trump’s administration, we saw too many loyalists with extreme views appointed to key government roles. I believe Cabinet members should represent the entire nation—not just one political faction—and I’ll continue to advocate for leaders who prioritize the well-being of all Americans.”

– What is your message to your Korean-American supporters?
“I’m incredibly grateful for the support I’ve received from Korean American communities, especially in California. Their encouragement has been a source of strength for me. I promise to meet with them as soon as my schedule allows. I’ll never forget the support and solidarity they’ve shown me, and I’m committed to giving back in every way I can.

– What are your thoughts on South Korea’s political crisis?
“I see South Korea’s recent efforts, including the repeal of martial law, as a significant step toward securing democracy. It’s inspiring to witness the country’s ongoing commitment to democratic principles. I’m confident that the U.S.-Korea alliance will remain strong, even as we face these challenges together.”

– What is your message to young Korean-American leaders?
“To young Korean American leaders, I say this: Get involved. Politics and public service need your voices. Participation is a core value of the American Dream, and we belong at the decision-making table. Each of us can achieve extraordinary things—even with our imperfections. I’m living proof of that. Despite my own shortcomings, I now have the honor of representing 9 million people. Believe in yourselves, because your contributions matter more than you know.”
