Myong J. Joun, a Korean immigrant to the United States, has been appointed as a federal judge at the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. Judge Joun is scheduled to take office on July 14.

His confirmation by the Senate on July 12 marks a significant milestone as he becomes the first Korean American and Asian American to serve on the District Court in Massachusetts.

Judge Joun and his family immigrated to the United States when he was just four years old. Faced with limited resources, they experienced a challenging start, spending six months in a New York City shelter.

Undeterred by these obstacles, young Joun persevered and remained hopeful for a brighter future. His dedication to education became evident as he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Massachusetts Boston in 1994, followed by a juris doctor degree from Suffolk University Law School in 1999.

During his time at law school, Joun worked tirelessly as a regional manager for a dollar store chain to support himself and his family. Despite the demanding schedule, he never wavered in his commitment to his studies and his pursuit of justice.

Following his graduation from Suffolk Law School, Joun joined Howard Friedman, PC, as an attorney from 1999 to 2007. Throughout his legal career, he championed the rights of the underprivileged and advocated for those who lacked legal protection.

Reflecting on his experiences, Joun stated, “I lived through many of those same problems. Equality and fairness before the law aren’t simply legal principles to me. They are my entire reason for becoming a lawyer.” His dedication to equality and justice caught the attention of the legal community, earning him respect and influence.

As a result of his outstanding advocacy and impact in the legal field, Joun was appointed as a federal judge in the District of Massachusetts by President Joe Biden on January 23, 2023.

Following confirmation by the Senate on July 12, he has made history as the first Asian American and first Korean American judge to serve on the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts.

Judge Joun’s appointment stands as a testament to the importance of diversity and representation in the judiciary system. His groundbreaking role opens doors for aspiring Korean American and Asian American legal professionals, inspiring future generations to pursue justice and equality for all.
