A record-breaking number of Asians are attending Harvard University this fall.
According to Harvard’s fall regular admission results, which were released today, 1,320 students, or 2.14% of the 56,937 total applicants, received acceptance notices. Add in the 722 early decision admittees, and the acceptance rate rises to 3.41%. This is a slight increase from the previous year’s 3.19%.
Notably, 29.9% of this year’s admitted students were Asian, the highest percentage in Harvard’s history. That’s three out of every 10 admitted students. Last year, the Asian acceptance rate was 27.8%.
In contrast, all other racial groups saw a drop in acceptance rates. Blacks were accepted at 15.3%, down 0.2 percentage points from 15.5% the previous year, and Latinos were accepted at 11.3%, down a whopping 1.3 percentage points from 12.6% last year. American Indians and Native Hawaiians were accepted at 2% and 0.5%, respectively.
Dean of Admissions William Fitzsimmons said, “(The increase in Asian acceptance rates) is a long-term trend and not surprising.” Meanwhile, Harvard received 7% fewer applications this year than last year (61,200).
