As the federal Real ID deadline approaches on June 7, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is expanding access for seniors and others who find online applications difficult. Seniors can now apply for a Real ID in person at DMV offices, and 14 locations across Southern California have extended their hours to meet rising demand.

Early Hours at 14 DMV Locations for In-Person Applications
To ease the application process, the DMV will open select offices at 7 a.m.—an hour earlier than usual—on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays through June 27. These early hours apply to the following 14 locations:
Thousand Oaks, Van Nuys, Arleta, Glendale, Pasadena, Culver City, Westminster, Costa Mesa, San Clemente, Rancho Cucamonga, San Diego Clairemont, San Marcos, El Cajon, and Poway.
Applicants who upload documents online in advance can complete the process in about 15 minutes, according to DMV officials. Alternatively, residents can request a Real ID when renewing their driver’s license.
Korean-Speaking Staff and Community Resources Available
Jeff Lee, executive director of the Korean American Federation of Los Angeles, said many Korean seniors have asked about the process. He noted that the Hollywood DMV has Korean-speaking staff who can assist with Real ID applications.
In-person applications are especially useful for older adults who may struggle with the DMV’s website. “If online registration isn’t required, it will be much easier for Korean seniors,” said Park Kwan-Il, director of a local senior center.
Documents Required for Real ID Application
Regardless of whether you apply online or in person, all applicants must bring the following documents:
-
A valid U.S. passport or birth certificate
-
A Social Security card
-
Two proofs of California residency, such as utility bills, bank statements, vehicle registration, or mobile phone bills
A DMV spokesperson emphasized that applicants should bring all necessary documents when visiting an office to avoid delays.
Real ID Now Required for Air Travel and Federal Building Access
Beginning June 7, all U.S. residents aged 18 and older must show a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or another accepted form of ID—such as a passport or permanent resident card—to board domestic flights or enter federal facilities.
