Rare $5 bills with unique serial numbers could fetch thousands

Some $5 bills with serials such as “G88888888A” or “B55555555C” could be worth thousands due to them carrying a “solid” serial number — meaning all digits in the serial are identical.

According to NBC News, citing GoBankingRates, despite there being over 826 million $5 bill notes in circulation today, some examples could be worth hundreds, if not thousands to currency collectors. It all has to do with their unique serial numbers.

The Penny Hoarder, an American personal finance website, explained that only about one in 11 million $5 notes have a solid serial numbers, which is why some sell for over $2,000.

For example, on the e-commerce platform eBay, a $5 bill with the serial number “CF77777777B” is listed for sale at $2,896. Additionally, a bill with the serial number “G88888888A,” owned by a TikTok influencer, was auctioned last year for $2,040.

The media recommends that if you possess a bill with the same serial number arrangement, regardless of the bill’s condition, you should visit a nearby coin shop to get an expert evaluation.
