Homeowners and commercial property owners now have the opportunity to receive rebates of up to $500 for planting trees.
On March 5, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) announced the launch of its ‘Turf Replacement Program’ through a press release. Under this program, homeowners and commercial property owners can receive $100 for each tree planted in place of grass and other water-intensive plants.
The objective of the program is to replace 2 million square feet of turf with shade trees across the jurisdiction.
Participants in the tree planting program are eligible for rebates for up to five trees. However, only tree species capable of providing adequate shade qualify for the rebate. Additionally, participants can receive $3 per square foot for removing turf and replacing it with low-water plants such as cacti.
MWD, the water supplier for the Southern California region, is encouraging individuals to plant trees on their residential or commercial properties to conserve water and prepare for drought conditions.
To promote participation in the rebate program, MWD is collaborating with local water agencies such as the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, the Sacramento Tree Foundation, and the Urban Forest Ecosystems Institute at Cal Poly.
MWD also provides tree recommendations on its website. For more information including rebate applications, click here.
