PCH in Malibu closed nightly for construction due to storm damage

A section of Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) in the Malibu area will be closed for nightly construction.

All lanes of the PCH in both directions will be closed nightly from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. or later the same morning, said Malibu officials on February 14. The closure is on Highway 1 from Sycamore Canyon Road to Las Posas Road in Ventura County.

According to Malibu officials, the closure was “due to erosion of the ocean side shoulder” from high tides and storm damage, and more expected storms.

Nightly closure will be in effect until further notice. Reopening times may vary based on high tides or storm conditions.

Caltrans plans to install k-rails to block off the right ocean-side lane and begin emergency steps to stabilize the collapsed slope. “Also, a Caltrans inspector must assess the damage each morning and determine when it’s safe to reopen,” Malibu officials said.

The authorities also said that only the land side lane will be open, and only two lanes in each direction may be available.
