According to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association on Tuesday, “Decision to Leave” is competing in the best non-English language film category.
Germany’s “All Quiet on the Western Front,” Argentina’s “Argentina, 1985,” Belgium’s “Close,” and India’s “RRR” are the other nominees in the category.
“Decision to Leave” follows police detective Hae-jun, portrayed by Park Hae-il, who begins to fall for a suspect: a Chinese widow named Seo-rae, portrayed by Tang Wei. The pair meet after Hae-jun begins to investigate the mysterious death of a man — Seo-rae’s husband — who was found dead after falling from a mountain.
Riding a fine line between investigative drama and romance, the film earned director Park the best director award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
In 2020, Bong Joon-ho’s Oscar-winning film “Parasite” (2019) won the best non-English language film at the Golden Globe Awards.
The upcoming Golden Globe Awards will be held on Jan. 11 at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. It marks the award ceremony’s 80th event.
