Over 220,000 children’s jewelry kits recalled due to harmful resin ingredient

More than 220,000 children’s jewelry-making kits are being recalled nationwide after concerns that liquid resin in the kits could cause skin, eye, and respiratory irritation or allergic reactions, especially in children.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced on February 27 that New Jersey-based importer LaRose Industries is recalling approximately 224,100 kits sold under the Cra-Z-Art brand with product names Gemex and Gel2Gem.

According to the CPSC, the kits contain liquid resin that includes hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA)—a chemical used in UV-activated hard coatings. This ingredient, at the levels found in the products, exceeds what is legally permitted for children’s products under the Federal Hazardous Substances Act.

Each recalled kit contains resin and a UV light curing device, marketed as a do-it-yourself activity set for creating jewelry and decorative items.

While no injuries or adverse incidents have been reported so far, authorities warn that exposure to HEMA could result in sensitivities or allergic reactions, especially among younger users.

The affected products were sold between January 2023 and September 2024 at major retailers including Target, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, and Joann, as well as online through Amazon and Walmart, priced between $13 and $36.

LaRose Industries has begun notifying customers directly and is offering full refunds for all recalled kits.

Parents are advised to immediately stop using the kits, store them out of children’s reach, and contact the company for return and refund instructions.
