The Korean American Family Services (KFAM) launched a special campaign in February, recognized as Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, to highlight the severity of dating violence and its prevalence among young people.
Citing recent statistics showing that one in three teens experiences dating violence, KFAM stated that dating violence is as prevalent among teens as it is among adults.
KFAM announced that the orange campaign aims to elevate awareness of the issue and better support young people experiencing dating violence by distributing oranges. The color orange symbolizes Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, and the oranges distributed through the campaign contain information about teen dating violence and ways to prevent it.
“It is time for more attention and support for teen dating violence,” said Katherine Yeom, Executive Director of KFAM. “And we expect this campaign to play an important role in raising awareness of teen dating violence.”
According to KFAM, 30 percent of victims exposed to teen dating violence do not speak out, and 50 percent of teens who have experienced dating violence have attempted suicide.
