Love in Music, an organization that promotes racial harmony and love, is holding a concert at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 20, at the First Presbyterian Church of Torrance.
Celebrating its 16th anniversary, Love in Music is a nonprofit foundation that promotes racial harmony in Los Angeles and Orange County through the service of Korean American high school volunteers who teach music to low-income students. In recent years, the organization has grown to become a multiracial classical music volunteer organization with volunteers of Chinese, Vietnamese, and Indian descent.
The concert will feature an ensemble performance by Love in Music volunteers, followed by this year’s graduating volunteers, and a joint performance by teachers and students from Los Angeles, South Bay, and Santa Ana. There will also be special performances by Kang Won Kim (violin), who has been the music director of Love in Music since 2021, and Yoo Min Lee, a principal pianist of the Sheboygan Symphony Orchestra.
“This is my second time participating in the concert, and I’m looking forward to seeing the students again,” said Kim. “I’m grateful for the opportunity for Love in Music family to come and make music together, and I’m proud of our solid establishment after the pandemic.”
“What makes Love in Music so important is that it’s not just a one-time event that happens a few times a year, but a continuous touch of love by teaching music to children in other communities every week,” said Lee. “We currently have 84 volunteers teaching 87 children various classical instruments. We invite you to come to the concert to witness their talent and encourage them.”
According to Love in Music, a total of 1,197 local children have received lessons over the past 16 years, and 1,006 musicians have volunteered with free lessons. Love in Music has been holding regular concerts every year since its founding, and was selected as a certified organization for the 2013 Presidential Volunteer Service Award.
