Gavin Newsom has called for an investigation into the soaring gas prices.
Governor Newsom sent a letter to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) on the 6th, asking them to “investigate wholesale natural gas prices in western regions, including California.”
Governor Newsom said in the letter, “The surge of gas prices is caused by infrastructure problems in the western supply chain, but those known factors cannot explain the extent and longevity of the price spike,” adding, “Please thoroughly investigate the cause of the surge in wholesale prices when purchasing gas.”
At the same time, Governor Newsom will seek the cause of the surge in gas prices and consumer protection measures at a meeting with the California Public Charges Committee and the California Energy Committee on the 7th (Today).
Consumer Watch Dog, a consumer protection group, also sent a letter to the Ministry of Justice on the 19th of last month to investigate the unfair business practices of the Southern California Gas Company (SCGC) in connection with the soaring gas prices.
In the case of Southern California, gas prices more than tripled in January compared to the previous month. The gas company announced that prices will fall sharply this month, but they are still higher than before.
