[Altadena, February 26]Mel Gibson has joined the Newsom recall campaign, taking a strong stance against California’s wildfire mismanagement, rising crime, and economic instability.

After losing his home to a California wildfire, Gibson decided to back Saving California, the group leading the recall effort. He criticized Governor Gavin Newsom’s leadership, saying it left communities vulnerable to natural disasters, crime, and economic hardship.

Mel Gibson Joins Newsom Recall, Calls for Leadership Change

At a press conference in Altadena, Saving California Chairman Randy Economy revealed that Gibson reached out less than a day after losing his home and immediately wanted to take action. Economy emphasized that this movement is about accountability, not politics.

Gibson, addressing supporters, expressed gratitude for the efforts of California’s firefighters but placed the blame for wildfire mismanagement squarely on state and local leaders. He recalled how firefighters apologized to him, saying they had let the community down. However, he disagreed, stating that Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass were the ones responsible for failing the people.

He also criticized the state’s high taxes, questioning whether residents were truly benefiting from them. Despite California’s 13.3% income tax rate—the highest in the country—crime, homelessness, and inflation continue to worsen, he said.

Demands for Transparency in Wildfire Recovery

Gibson also raised concerns about California’s wildfire recovery process, questioning whether affected residents had any say in rebuilding efforts. He argued that communities like Palisades and Altadena were left out of key decisions and criticized Mayor Bass for deflecting responsibility instead of ensuring adequate resources for fire prevention and recovery.

Calls for Federal Oversight of California’s Spending

The actor also questioned Newsom’s $40 billion federal aid request, calling for strict oversight to ensure transparency. He argued that taxpayers deserved to know exactly how relief funds were being used.

Additionally, Gibson took issue with state officials taking overseas trips during crises, indirectly referencing Mayor Bass’s controversial trip to Ghana on the same day a major wildfire broke out.

“We need leadership that takes action before it’s too late,” he said, stressing the need for leaders who stand with the people instead of offering excuses.

How the Recall Process Works

The Saving California recall campaign must collect 1.5 million valid signatures within 160 days to trigger a statewide recall election.
If successful, voters will face two key questions on the ballot:

  • Should Governor Gavin Newsom be removed from office? (Yes/No)
  • If removed, who should replace him? (List of candidates)
