The Korean American Federation of Los Angeles (KAFLA) is currently accepting applications for rebates from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP).
“We are aware that many Koreans are facing difficulties due to the lack of air conditioners in older apartments and houses,” stated a spokesperson for the Korean American Federation of Los Angeles. “For those who are unable to access city services due to language barriers, we will assist them in the application process by providing necessary documentation.”
The program, known as “Cool LA,” enables LADWP to offer up to $225 to low-income households for the purchase of an air conditioner. To be eligible, applicants must be LADWP customers and qualify for one of the following programs: EZ-Save, the low-income discount program; Lifeline Rate, designed for seniors and individuals with physical or mental disabilities; Life Support Equipment Discount, for respirators; or Physician Certified Allowance Discount, for medical conditions.
Income thresholds for eligibility are set at $39,440 or less for an individual and less than $60,000 for a family of four.
Applicants can receive a $150 rebate through the Cool LA program by submitting receipts for window or wall-mounted air conditioners or portable air conditioners purchased after September 1, 2022. An additional $75 can be obtained if the air conditioner purchased is energy efficient.
The Korean American Federation of Los Angeles explained, “If you are not already enrolled in LADWP’s low-income discount program, you will need to sign up and apply for a refund, which may take some time.”
Koreans interested in applying can visit the Korean American Community Center with their ID, last month’s LADWP bill, and proof of income (e.g., tax return, Medi-Cal card, food stamps, welfare notice, etc.).
