Notably, this year saw the attendance of LA Mayor Karen Bass at the ceremony, where she delivered a congratulatory message. Additionally, 27 descendants of independence movement patriots residing in Southern California participated in the event to honor their ancestors who valiantly fought for Korea’s independence.
During a special ceremony, these descendants were presented with a large Korean flag, followed by a commemorative photo session. The ceremony, attended by more than 200 people, featured prominent figures including Consul General Youngwan Kim, U.S. Representative Jimmy Gomez of the 34th Congressional District, James An (President of the Korean American Federation of Los Angeles), and Chester Kim (President of Heritage of Korean Independence USA Southwest).
Mayor Bass expressed her appreciation, stating, “I am honored to celebrate Korea’s Independence Day alongside Korean Americans in Los Angeles, especially on the 120th anniversary of Korean immigration to the United States. The remarkable growth of the Korean American community in both Korea and the United States since Korea’s liberation is truly inspiring, given the adversities faced.”
Councilmember Jimmy Gomez shared his thoughts, saying, “Attending this event to commemorate the significant day when Korea reclaimed its independence from Japanese colonial rule was indeed meaningful. Meeting the descendants of the patriots who fervently fought for freedom and independence was a privilege. Their valuable contributions to the social and economic progress of Los Angeles are deeply appreciated.”
Consul General Kim conveyed a message from South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, emphasizing, “We must honor the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country’s freedom and independence. The fundamental principles of the independence movement continue to fuel our ambition of evolving into a globally significant nation that earnestly upholds its responsibilities. This dedication revolves around ensuring freedom, peace, and prosperity for all individuals worldwide.”
Following the speeches by government officials, descendants of the independence movement’s patriots delivered special addresses. Helen Kim, the great-granddaughter of Patriot Jang Sung-soon, and Yong-hae Kim, the great-granddaughter of Patriot Kim Tae-Yeon, spoke eloquently about their ancestors’ unwavering determination to achieve independence.
“I am a great grand son of Sungkwon Kim and Haewon Kim. I am honor to be here to celebrate 78th anniversary of Korea’s liberation. Also, great to be here to show my respect to my great grand parents as well as to independence fighters”, said Colin Kim.
