Katherine Yeom, Executive Director at Korean American Family Services, has been appointed to the Los Angeles Commission of the Status of Women (LACSW). As a subcommittee of the City’s Department of Civil Rights, LACSW advises the City on policies ensuring equal rights for women. The commission currently comprises seven female commissioners.
In her recommendation to the City Council, Mayor Karen Bass emphasized Yeom’s qualifications. “She has the education and experience necessary to serve on the commission and can work towards the betterment of the city,” wrote Mayor Bass.
Yeom, who majored in biology and history at the University of Maryland, also completed a master’s program in teaching at USC. She has been leading Korean American Family Services as the Executive Director since 2020. Yeom’s term on the commission is set to run until June 30, 2024.
With Yeom’s appointment, the number of Korean Americans serving as commissioners in the L.A. city council has risen to 14.
