Judge Michelle Kim nominated to serve as an Associate Justice of 2nd District Court of Appeal

Judge Michelle C. Kim of Los Angeles County has been nominated to an Associate Justice of the Second District Court of Appeal, Division One.

On September 30, Governor Gavin Newsom announced the nomination of Kim to the appellate court from the Los Angeles County Superior Court.

A graduate of UCLA School of Law, Kim served as a public defender and alternate public defender in LA County from 2003 to 2018, handling a variety of cases before serving in the Superior Court of Los Angeles County.

Before law school, Kim was the data manager at the UCLA Women and Family Project, supervising researchers on long-term studies on women and HIV. She also worked for the Asian Americans Advancing Justice in Los Angeles, where she led a statewide Asian Pacific Employment Discrimination Outreach Project.

Kim has also been active in community service. Over the years, she has served on several nonprofit organizations and legal associations and has contributed as a leader on various boards and committees, particularly for the Asian Pacific community. She is currently a member of several legal associations and also serves on the UCLA Alumni Association Board of Directors.

With the governor’s nomination, Kim will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Justice Victoria D. Cheney.
