Homes in Irvine are being targeted in a recent rash of burglaries. The Irvine Police Department posted on Facebook on March 16 that 34 residential burglaries have been reported in the past 35 days in the neighborhood, and outlined precautions to avoid becoming a victim.

According to police, the recent spate of burglaries is similar to the modus operandi of a South American traveling burglary ring that has been operating throughout Orange County. They enter the country posing as tourists, often break or disable security cameras, and enter homes, usually through second-story windows or doors.

Police said the suspects target cash and jewelry, as well as any valuables they can take with them, and often observe the home for days before the crime, then use ladders to gain access to the master bedroom, on the second floor when the home is vacant.

To prevent crime and respond to losses, authorities recommended: installing security film on windows and glass doors; installing a security system, including cameras; being aware of suspicious activity in the neighborhood; talking on the phone to suspicious people instead of opening the door; locking doors and windows; changing light timers when leaving the house; inventorying and photographing valuables; and keeping receipts.

Authorities asked people to call 949-724-7000 if they see anyone suspicious. Anonymous tips are also available at 855-847-6227.

“What is happening here is something we are seeing all over Orange County and the country, and Irvine is no exception,” the Irvine Police Department added.
