YG Entertainment’s K-pop boy group, iKON, won the Best New Artist Award at Japan Record Awards on Friday, December 30. As Hallyu – the “Korean Wave” – is currently in the stasis in Japan, iKON’s accomplishment holds a special meaning.

iKON is the third Korean artist/group to be awarded with the Best New Artist Award at Japan Record Awards. Previous artists include Yang Soo-kyung in 1990 and Big Bang in 2009.

Previously, iKON won the Tencent QQ Music Asia Star Award at 2016 Melon Music Awards on November 19.

“We truly appreciated it,” said iKON members at the Awards. “We’ve worked hard to be back with more mature stages as we perform at international tour concerts. We will be back with new music and performances next year.”

Prior to their comeback in January, the group will meet their fans via Naver V-App.
