Fullerton School District holds first-ever Korean-language workshop for parents

The Fullerton School District hosted its first-ever Korean-language workshop, drawing more than 70 Korean American parents in a successful turnout.

On February 24, the district, led by Superintendent Robert Pletka, held the inaugural session of a workshop series for Korean parents at Laguna Road Elementary School. The event marked the first official Korean-language session led by newly appointed Korean Liaison Sujin Choi, who was recently assigned to develop the district’s Korean dual-language curriculum.

The first session, part of a four-part series, focused on “21st-Century Learning,” covering the evolving educational landscape, standardized testing, and the role of the GATE program. The workshop attracted a significant number of Korean parents with children in grades K–8 within the district, and several district officials attended to observe its success.

“I wasn’t sure how many Korean parents would attend, but the turnout was greater than expected,” Choi said in an interview. “Even high-ranking district officials were pleased with the success of the event.”

Several members of Korean Outreach, a group of Korean parents who have long advocated for a Korean liaison in the district, were also in attendance. Choi noted that many parents appreciated having access to important educational information in Korean, as well as the opportunity to ask questions and receive answers in their native language.

The Fullerton School District also offers the same workshop series in English and Spanish, with identical content delivered in different languages.

“The goal of these parent workshops is to help families engage with the American education system and better understand the skills needed in the 21st century,” Choi explained. “Many Korean parents received their education in Korea, so attending these sessions can provide valuable insights into the U.S. school system.”

The second session of the Korean-language workshop series, titled “Fullerton Middle Schools and Academic Pathways,” will be held on April 7 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Parks Junior High School.
