The Fullerton School District will host the final round of its first-ever K-Pop Battle of the Bands on April 9 at 5 p.m. at The Source Mall (6940 Beach Blvd, Buena Park). The Fullerton K-pop competition marks a major cultural initiative, bringing together local students through music and dance.

Teams selected from 120 students through multi-round auditions
The program began last fall, becoming the first of its kind among school districts in Orange County. The audition phase drew over 120 students from various ethnic backgrounds. After a panel evaluation that included district teachers, program staff, and professional K-pop instructors, 50 students were selected as trainees.
The third round of auditions narrowed the group to 25 finalists, who were then divided into five school-based bands. Each band includes five students representing one of five participating middle schools: Beechwood, Fisler, Nicholas, Parks, and Ladera Vista School of the Arts.
Training included K-pop master classes and cultural activities
Over several months, the student bands trained weekly, participating in K-pop music and dance master classes. They also explored aspects of Korean culture, including traditional instruments and cuisine. Students visited the Korean Education Center in LA to deepen their understanding of Korean history and traditions.
Superintendent Robert Pletka stated, “The K-Pop Battle of the Bands gives students the chance to explore their talents, engage in creative teamwork, and build confidence beyond the classroom.”
Public event with live performances and raffle prizes
In the finals, each team will perform in front of a professional judging panel for the title of inaugural champion. The event will also feature special performances and raffle giveaways.
According to Phil Ling, Fullerton’s Director of Educational Services, “Watching students shine with passion and talent during auditions was inspiring. The program connects students with Korean culture and provides a powerful platform for performance and community engagement.”
A documentary-style video of the students’ journey is currently being produced by Christian Romellié, a Fullerton School District alumnus.
The final event is free to attend, with seating available on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, call the school district at 657-706-3774.
