“We wanted to help our friends who can’t go back to school because of the Maui wildfires.”
A group of students in the fourth grade at Third Street Elementary School in LA Koreatown shared a heartwarming story about selling homemade lemonade and cookies to raise money for the victims of the Maui wildfires.
Classmates Mabel Park, Rhona Park, Kimie Wagle, and Noelle Ko heard about the Maui wildfires on the news, and when they heard that some students were unable to return to school because of the fires, they wanted to help. They sold their favorite toys, books, and homemade lemonade, cookies, and pudding at Harold A Henry Park in September.
“Honestly, it was hard to organize everything ourselves,” said Mabel Park, “but we were happy to know that our small steps could help someone and create a positive and beautiful outcome.”
“It’s going to be hard to go back to school right away because of the wildfires, but we want to help our friends continue their education,” said Rhona Park. “There is always light in dark times. We hope that the money we donate will be used to make Maui a more beautiful place than it was before.”
The students recently delivered a total of $700, including $200 from fundraising and $500 from donations from their community, along with a handwritten letter, to the nonprofit organization NA LEO PULAMA O MAUI, and their warm thoughts made their way to Maui’s schools.
