Eva Chow (Korean name: Hee Kyung Chun) has built a remarkable legacy as both a business leader and cultural icon.

Founder and designer of the fashion brand Eva Chun, board member at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and co-chair of the renowned Art+Film Gala, she has been a driving force behind some of the most dazzling events in LA. Chow also spent decades managing the world-famous Mr. Chow restaurant and founded KHEE Soju, a premium soju brand. Recently inducted into the Asian Hall of Fame, The New York Times fittingly crowned her the “Culture Queen” of LA.

In an interview, Chow shared insights into her journey, from launching KHEE Soju to championing Korean culture in LA. The following is an edited excerpt from the interview:

– Of all your roles, you’re perhaps best known as co-chair of the LACMA Art+Film Gala. Can you tell us about this event?
“In the early 2010s, LACMA’s film department faced the threat of closure due to budget issues. We wanted to host an event that celebrated the intersection of art and film while raising funds. I knew I needed someone with deep industry connections, so I asked Leonardo DiCaprio to co-chair with me. Together, we’ve built the Gala into a significant annual event. This year marks the 13th edition, and we’ve raised over $60 million so far. It’s grown to the point where Gucci is now an official sponsor.
One of my fondest memories was presenting an award to director Park Chan-wook in 2022. I’ve long admired his work, and it was so meaningful to see his artistic achievements recognized.”

– Many in the Korean community know you as the founder of KHEE Soju. What inspired you to create a soju brand?
“After moving to the U.S. at 18, I had little connection with Korea for years, but I always missed Korean culture, even in the glamorous social circles I moved in. When I joined the LACMA board in 2006, I began traveling frequently to Korea to introduce local artists to the U.S. That’s when I noticed how deeply ingrained soju is in Korean life.
However, I realized that when people celebrated special occasions, they often turned to wine or whiskey instead of soju. I wanted to create a premium soju that could be enjoyed in those moments of celebration. That’s how KHEE Soju was born.”

Khee Soju

– KHEE Soju has become a favorite among celebrities like Lee Jung-jae and BTS. What’s the key to its success?
“I love luxury, but to me, true luxury isn’t just about a high price tag—it’s about timelessness. A product that stands the test of time must be crafted with genuine care and passion. When creating KHEE Soju, I poured my heart into every detail, from selecting the manufacturing facility to the packaging design. Even though it sold out early on and gained a premium status, I deliberately kept production limited. Luxury brands take time to grow, and I’m focused on cultivating it slowly and thoughtfully.”

– How did it feel to be inducted into the Asian Hall of Fame?
“I’ve primarily been active in mainstream social circles, so I never expected much recognition from the Asian American community. I was pleasantly surprised and deeply honored that people who share my heritage acknowledged my work. This recognition holds special meaning for me.”

– As the founder of a soju brand, what restaurant in LA would you recommend?
“I highly recommend a Korean restaurant by celebrity chef Akira Back. The food and atmosphere are both exceptional. Plus, KHEE Soju is one of their best sellers! (laughs)”
