The completion of the Automated People Mover (APM) system at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), originally scheduled for this year, has been delayed.

According to the LA Times, LAX officials requested $400 million in additional funding for the APM project to the Board of Commissioners on July 11. If approved, the new completion date will be December 8, 2025, approximately a year and a half later than planned.

With the additional $400 million, the total cost of the project will exceed $3 billion, reaching $3.34 billion. The APM is currently about 95% complete. The extra funding will be used to cover the costs incurred due to the delay.

As the world’s fifth busiest airport, LAX is looking to the APM project to significantly alleviate the chronic traffic congestion in its arrival and departure areas.

This improvement is particularly important for the city as it prepares for the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Olympics.
