CDC warns of flu and respiratory illness surge in California

Federal health authorities have issued a warning about a surge in flu and respiratory illnesses across California, citing flu-related illnesses as reaching dangerous levels.

On January 16, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that emergency room visits for flu in California were categorized as “very high” as of January 13.

“This indicates that patients are experiencing severe symptoms from viral infections and require medical care,” the CDC explained.

In addition to the flu, emergency room visits related to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)—a common cause of pneumonia and bronchitis—were rated as “moderate” but are showing an upward trend, according to the CDC.

Adding to the concern, wastewater monitoring has detected alarming levels of flu and RSV viruses across California.

The CDC reported that flu virus detection in California’s wastewater is at a “very high” level, while RSV detection is classified as “high.” Public health authorities regularly monitor wastewater to assess the spread of viruses within communities.

“RSV-related illnesses are currently affecting vulnerable populations, particularly the elderly and young children, warranting heightened precautions,” the CDC stated. “Fortunately, while COVID-19 detections are sporadically rising, they remain at a ‘minimal’ level in California.”

To mitigate the spread of these illnesses, the CDC recommends the following preventive measures:

-Wash hands frequently with soap and water.
-Avoid sharing food or drinks if infected with a virus.
-Keep living spaces clean and maintain hygiene.
-Cover your mouth when coughing.
-Wear a mask if symptoms are severe.

By taking these steps, individuals can help reduce the risk of spreading respiratory illnesses.
