California’s freeways topped the nation’s most detested highways.

The survey, conducted by the car dealership Gunther Volvo Cars Daytona Beach, involved 3,000 American drivers in October and ranked the 100 most hated roads to drive on in the U.S.

The survey revealed that the top three most detested highways are all located in California, with U.S. Route 101 in Los Angeles and San Francisco taking the dishonor of being the number one most loathed highway in America.

  1. California, US-101

U.S. Route 101 in California is infamous for its consistent congestion, leading to significant delays and challenges, particularly in densely populated areas like San Francisco and Los Angeles.

The freeway’s route through major tourist attractions further contributes to the high traffic volume, causing longer commutes.

“The traffic pace can decelerate to speeds slower than an average person’s walking pace, particularly noticeable during high-density travel times,” the dealership noted.

2. California, I-5

California Interstate 5 runs the length of the state of California as it stretches from San Diego to Oregon. The stretch of the freeway represents the duration of pain for drivers.

“I-5 is a vital artery stretching from San Diego to Oregon, but its segment through Los Angeles epitomizes commuter frustration,” according to the dealership. “Traffic bottlenecking notoriously near juggernaut junctions like the East LA and 110 interchanges.”

Some other contributing factors to what makes this highway undesirable include endless construction and the dreaded rush hour.

Stretching from San Diego to Oregon, California Interstate 5 represents a prolonged ordeal for drivers, particularly through Los Angeles.

“I-5 is a vital artery from San Diego to Oregon, but its segment through Los Angeles epitomizes commuter frustration,” said the report.

The infamous I-5 freeway is a traffic bottleneck, particularly near major junctions like the East LA and 110 interchanges. Forever-going construction and intense rush hour traffic further contribute to losing drivers’ favor.

3. California, I-405

Also known as the San Diego Freeway, I-405 is renowned for its severe congestion, posing a particular challenge for holiday travelers in and around Los Angeles.

Cutting through around the city, I-405 has earned a reputation as a symbol of a logjam. While it occupies a unique spot in Los Angeles’ city infrastructure and the environment, for drivers, when it comes to the drivers the commute is a nightmare.
