American visits to Korea increase by 34% due to Hallyu and strong dollar

The number of Americans, including Korean Americans, visiting South Korea has seen a significant increase, according to a recent report.

Data from the Korea Tourism Organization Los Angeles office reveals that 244,316 Americans visited Korea in the first quarter of this year, marking a notable surge of 34.4% compared to last year, which saw 181,754 visitors.

When compared to the pre-pandemic period of 2019, the increase is even more substantial, with a 19.3% rise from 207,744 visitors. Last year, the annual number of American visitors reached 1,086,415, surpassing the 2019 figure by 4.1%.

The surge in American visitors to Korea follows a sharp decline during the pandemic, with only 220,417 visitors in 2020 and 204,025 in 2021. However, the numbers rebounded significantly in 2022, reaching 543,648.

Yoohyun Jang, head of the Korea Tourism Organization Los Angeles Office, attributes the increase in American visitors to Korea’s growing appeal through over-the-top (OTT) media streaming services like Netflix during the pandemic. The widespread popularity of Korean culture, including K-food and K-beauty, has transcended mere interest, making Korea a highly desirable travel destination.

South Korea’s recognition as a major travel destination for 2024 further boosted its appeal, with a travel industry survey at the Signature Travel Consortium’s annual meeting highlighting Korea as one of the most promising travel destinations.

To further capitalize on this momentum, efforts are underway to enhance B2B connections by 30% from last year, aiming for 1.25 million annual visitors. Plans include hosting international events with over 1,000 participants and expanding flights to Korea in collaboration with national carriers, Hawaiian Airlines, and Air Canada.

Korean Americans are also contributing to the surge in visitors to their home country. Travel agencies in Los Angeles report a 30-40% increase in demand for trips to Korea compared to the first quarter of last year. This trend is expected to continue, with bookings for summer vacations through the fall season rapidly increasing.

Industry insiders anticipate sustained growth in demand for Korean visits, driven by favorable exchange rates and the allure of discounted travel and shopping opportunities, both during peak and off-peak seasons.
