3. Adam Schiff, U.S. Senate in California
One of the races of interest to voters of California in the November 5 election is the U.S. Senate race. The Korea Daily is endorsing Adam Schiff (D), a candidate with longstanding ties to the Korean American community, including the resolution for the Comfort Women victims, who were forced into sexual slavery by the Imperial Japanese Army.
Schiff is an 11-term elected official in the U.S. House of Representatives. A graduate of Stanford and Harvard Law School, he entered politics in 1996 as a California State Senator and was elected in 2001 to represent California’s 27th (now 30th) Congressional District, which centers around the city of Burbank. Coming from a Jewish family that suffered in the Holocaust, he has served on the Intelligence Committee, where he has also served as Chair.
Although he is a Democrat, his policies and actions have been centrist, including voting in favor of the 2003 invasion of Iraq, but he has recently branched out into progressive activism, speaking out in favor of the George Floyd murder protests and the Hollywood writers’ strike. Schiff has also been active on foreign affairs and domestic issues, including introducing a resolution in protest of the Armenian Genocide.
Schiff is currently advocating for comprehensive reform that includes judicial support for the controversial issue of immigration. He emphasizes that reform will ensure that immigrant workers are treated with dignity and pave the way for Dreamers and farmworkers to apply for citizenship. He is also campaigning on policies to expand the number of Supreme Court justices, reform the judiciary to eliminate political bias, protect minority voting rights, expand housing tax credits to help the homeless, and provide low-interest loans to build multifamily housing.
Schiff joined former Representative Mike Honda in calling for an apology to Japan over the Comfort Women issue, and in 2017, Schiff introduced a bill to ban travel to North Korea. Schiff topped the primary in March with 31.6% of the vote (2.30 million votes) and is facing Republican Steve Garvey, a former baseball player, in the general election.
