Jang Si-Won, currently enrolled at MiraCosta Community College, was accepted to all University of California campuses he applied to. He chose to study applied mathematics at UC Berkeley, widely recognized as one of the top public universities in the United States.

Early Start Through Homeschooling During Pandemic

Jang began homeschooling when his elementary school temporarily closed during the COVID-19 pandemic. With support from his parents and through the online high school program CAL Prep, he accelerated his education. From March 2020 to May 2022, he completed both middle and high school in just two years and three months.

In May 2022, he passed the California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE) and immediately enrolled at MiraCosta College.

Successful Transfer After Two Years of College Coursework

After completing about two years of college coursework with strong academic performance, Jang applied to multiple UC campuses and was accepted by all. He ultimately chose UC Berkeley and will begin classes there this fall.

Sibling Follows in His Footsteps

Jang’s 13-year-old sister, Jang So-Hee, also began homeschooling early, inspired by her brother’s path. She entered MiraCosta College last year and completed 37 college credits, earning ‘A’ grades in every course.

While her brother is drawn to mathematics and computer science, So-Hee has expressed interest in English literature and theater. She plans to major in English and minor in theater, aiming for a future in the arts.

Education-Focused Family Environment

Their mother, Sarah Jang, attributes their success to the family’s background in education, both in the U.S. and Korea. Growing up around college students of various ages, the siblings learned to manage their time—focusing on studies during the week and enjoying rest on weekends.

In addition, the parents allowed them flexible schedules, giving more free time after completing their daily study goals. Regular international travel during school breaks also helped broaden their perspectives.

Ambitious Career Goals Ahead

In an interview with The Korea Daily, Jang Si-Won shared his goal of becoming a computer engineer. He plans to study emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain, cybersecurity, and cloud computing.

His sister, So-Hee, hopes to become a psychologist, combining her artistic sensitivity and outgoing personality to make a positive impact on the world.

The siblings’ nontraditional academic journey—designed around their own pace and interests—offers a meaningful example for the Korean American community navigating a rapidly changing world.
