Applications for electric bicycle purchase incentives of up to $2,000 are now open starting today (December 18).
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) recently announced the launch of the California Electric Bicycle Incentive Project (CEIP) earlier this month to promote the use of eco-friendly transportation.
CARB has allocated a $3 million budget for the CEIP to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and address air pollution issues while providing California residents with sustainable transportation options. Eligible applicants must be California residents aged 18 or older with a household income at or below 300% of the federal poverty level.
Applications can be submitted via the project website (ebikeincentives.org) starting at 6 PM. Applicants must create an account and upload necessary documents, including proof of income and residency. As the program is on a first-come, first-served basis until funds are exhausted, a high volume of applications is expected. Preparing the required documents in advance is highly recommended.
Applicants must provide state-issued identification, such as a driver’s license, and income proof from the previous year, which can include tax forms like W-2s or 1099s. All documents must be uploaded to the website in electronic file format, which can be prepared in advance by taking photos or scanning the documents..
The application form requires basic information such as name, address, and phone number. After uploading all required documents, applicants must watch an e-bike safety guidelines video, sign the application, and submit it for review.
Once the review process is completed, which may take up to 60 days, applicants will receive a voucher code via email. The voucher must be used within 45 days, with a one-time extension of an additional 45 days available.
The voucher can only be used for purchasing new electric bicycles classified as Class 13, equipped with a motor of 750W or less and a maximum speed of 20 or 28 mph. The bicycles must include pedals, headlights, and taillights, meet safety certifications (ANSI/CAN/UL-2849 or EN-15194), and provide at least a one-year warranty on electrical components.
Voucher use is limited to new e-bikes and cannot be applied to used e-bikes, retrofitted bicycles, or scooters.
