Justin Park, a Korean-American R&B artist, has found himself in the global spotlight thanks to BTS’ Jungkook. The K-pop superstar shared Park’s song on Instagram, calling it “an amazing song.” Jungkook even performed the track live during a streaming session that drew over 100 million viewers.

This unexpected endorsement has amplified Park’s profile as he competes in the Open Verse competition, a music contest showcasing independent artists.

Park, who previously toured with Amber, a former member of the K-pop group f(x), is now aiming to secure a spot in the finals of the competition.

Park grew up in the heart of Koreatown, where his musical influences ranged from international superstars like Michael Jackson and Chris Brown to the K-pop and Korean ballads that played in his family’s home. He recalls immersing himself in music by purchasing CDs from local record stores, listening to them on repeat, and singing along. Without professional recording equipment, he began creating music by writing new lyrics for existing songs, laying the foundation for his career as an artist.

Park’s musical journey started in middle school when he began uploading covers of popular songs online. By high school, he had formed a rap duo with a friend, experimenting with creating original music. Reflecting on his early days, he remembers a pivotal experience working with a wealthy collaborator who purchased high-end equipment. “He didn’t know how to use it, and to be honest, even now, I still don’t know how it works,” he said with a laugh.

His determination to succeed has been evident through years of relentless effort. Park participated in notable competitions such as K-pop Star Season 4 in 2014, American Idol in 2021, and Show Me the Money 11 in 2022. These experiences pushed him to grow as an artist. He recalls the intensity of his time on Show Me the Money, where he endured grueling schedules with only three to four hours of sleep each night. “It was one of the toughest experiences of my life, but it made me stronger,” he said.

Today, Park is on the brink of a breakthrough. If he secures his place in the finals of the Open Verse competition, he will compete on December 15 in Los Angeles for the grand prize: $10,000 and a distribution deal. Park is determined to leave a lasting impression. “If I make it to the finals, I want to deliver a performance that combines singing and stage presence, channeling the energy of a superstar like Michael Jackson,” he said.

The competition’s finale will also offer finalists the chance to work with industry veterans, including songwriter and producer Brian Lee, pop songwriter Madison Love, and rapper and producer Verbal. Park is particularly excited about the opportunity to collaborate with Brian Lee. “I want to learn new perspectives on songwriting through our collaboration,” he said, expressing his hopes for creative growth.

While the competition is a significant milestone, Park is also preparing to release a new album that reflects years of hard work. The album, which he has been developing for two years, will include five original songs and accompanying music videos. Park has also been hosting monthly networking events for music professionals to establish himself as a prominent figure in the independent music scene.

“I want to prove that independent artists can handle everything on their own,” he said. “Through this album, I hope to connect with my fans on a deeper level and show them what’s possible.”

With his talent, determination, and growing support from fans worldwide, Justin Park is proving that success is within reach for independent artists who are willing to chase their dreams relentlessly. His journey, rooted in the vibrant community of Koreatown, continues to inspire as he rises to new heights in the music industry.
