Pastor Kangwon Lee, who ran a private shelter for homeless people, has died in a tent on the street.

Lee had previously helped people on the streets while running the Agape Home Mission but became homeless himself after multiple controversies surrounding his past shelter operation.

The community is grieving at his misfortune, especially when the news of his death comes shortly after he moved from the street to the government’s homeless relocation program, Inside Safe.

According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, 69-year-old Kangwon Lee was found dead in a tent on the street near South Gramercy Place in the Los Angeles Koreatown neighborhood on July 5. The cause of death has not yet been determined.

Lee’s passing went unreported for nearly a month before being confirmed by Father Yohan Kim of St. James Church, who works to help the homeless.

Kim will hold a memorial service for Lee at 7 p.m. on August 2, at a shelter in Koreatown at 2251 W 21st Street.
