Chi Soo Kim appointed as U.S. Magistrate Judge for Eastern District of California

On March 29, Korean-American Judge Chi Soo Kim was appointed as a United States Magistrate Judge in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California.

Kim will serve a term of eight years. She will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Magistrate Judge Kendall J. Newman in February.

Prior to her appointment, Kim had a diverse legal career spanning 19 years in both the public and private sectors. Her public service record includes roles as a Staff Attorney for the Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, along with judicial clerkships under former U.S. District Judge William W. Schwarzer and retired Magistrate Judge Nandor J. Vadas at the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. Before her appointment as a magistrate judge, she served as the Chief of the Civil Division at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California.

Chi Soo Kim

Judge Kim is a graduate of Princeton University and Georgetown University Law Center. As a lawyer, she has volunteered for civic education programs for high school students and taught law at the UC Davis and UC San Francisco schools of law.
