The ‘New Clean Streets Initiative’ is set to roll out in the Pico Union and Westlake neighborhoods, neighboring LA Koreatown.
Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez, representing L.A.’s First District, announced on March 11 the installation of 90 new public trash cans in these high foot traffic areas. This effort is part of the Clean Streets initiative, which also includes promoting MyLA311, a service enabling residents to report illegal trash dumping.
“Pico Union and Westlake, two of the most densely populated areas in L.A. County, have historically seen a lack of resources and services to tackle trash and cleanliness issues,” Hernandez stated.
The Los Angeles Department of Sanitation and Environmental Needs (LASAN), in collaboration with the District 1 office, started installing 30 automated and 60 steel trash cans last week, aiming to finish by mid-March.
These bins will be placed along Vermont Avenue, Washington Boulevard, Venice Boulevard, Alvarado Street, and near MacArthur Park, with trash collection scheduled six days a week, Monday through Saturday.
The District 1 office is also partnering with the City of L.A. and community organizations to focus on underreported bulky items and illegal trash dumping.
Furthermore, Hernandez revealed plans to target neighborhoods with low MyLA311 reporting rates, despite high illegal dumping, with initiatives including weekly 311 walks, educational signage, and outreach to schools, faith groups, small businesses, and community organizations.
“While specific details are yet to be shared, our discussions will focus on expanding trash can installations and combating illegal dumping,” stated Jungmin Lee, Deputy of Constituent Services.
