Peter Sohn’s ‘Elemental’ nominated for Best Animated Feature Film at Oscars

Directed by second-generation Korean-American Peter Sohn, ‘Elemental’ has secured a nomination for Best Animated Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards.

Nominated on January 23, ‘Elemental’ will compete against ‘The Boy and the Heron’, ‘Nimona’, ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’, and ‘Robot Dreams’ at the award ceremony scheduled for March 10.

‘Elemental’ is an animated film portraying a cross-cultural tale of an immigrant family in a fantastical world where the four elements of fire, water, land, and air coexist.

The film’s protagonist, Ember Lumen, conceals her glassmaking dream to fulfill her father’s wish of taking over their family-owned convenience store, mirroring the experience of a Korean eldest daughter.

Peter Sohn is a second-generation Korean American whose parents arrived in the U.S. in the late 1960s. In a KTLA interview, Sohn expressed, “We are proud that it connected with the audience,” emphasizing, “The heart of it was thanking our parents’ sacrifices.”
