California State Senator Dave Min (D-Orange County) was arrested for driving under the influence.
According to a press release issued by the California Highway Patrol’s (CHP) Capitol Protection Section, around 10:20 p.m. on May 2, Min left the State Capitol without turning on his headlights and drove his silver Toyota Camry southbound on 9th Street near S. Street, several blocks away, where he was observed by CHP officers.
The CHP officers followed Min’s vehicle and observed him pause at a red light at the intersection before continuing straight ahead. The CHP officers then pulled Min’s car over to the side of the road, during which they reportedly observed that Min appeared to be intoxicated.
CHP officers determined that Min was over the legal limit and arrested him at the scene. It is unclear if a breathalyser was used during this process.
Min was booked into the Sacramento County Jail on a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence of alcohol with a blood alcohol content above the legal limit of 0.08 percent and was released early in the morning on May 3.
Min took to social media on Wednesday morning to apologize for his actions. “My decision to drive last night was irresponsible,” he wrote on Facebook, “I accept full responsibility, and there is no excuse for my actions.”
Min represents California’s 37th Senate district, which includes Anaheim, Costa Mesa, Orange, Huntington Beach, Irvine, Newport Beach, and Laguna Beach.
It will be interesting to see how this incident affects his campaign, as he is currently running and campaigning for a congressional seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Min announced in January that he is running for the seat currently held by Rep. Katie Porter. Porter decided to run for the U.S. Senate seat in the district after U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein announced in February that she would not run again.
