South Korean Government has officially begun the war against digital sexual crimes using hidden cameras.

On September 26, the government had a cabinet council meeting to announce ‘Comprehensive Countermeasures to Prevent Damages from Digital Sexual Crimes.’

According to the announced comprehensive countermeasures, the government classifies the improvement plan in 6 stages, from regulations on spy camera sales to the prevention of related crimes. The plan will be carried forward in 22 specified assignments.

First of all, the “spy cameras,” which are frequently misused in related crimes, will be under strict regulations.

Also, the new regulation will decrease the time it takes to delete illegally uploaded video contents. Compared to the current 11 days in average, it will decrease to 3 days.

Public areas like subway station restrooms, where hidden cameras are frequently found, will be screened thoroughly.

Those who commit digital sex crimes will face increased penalties. For instance, those who film and distribute revenge pornography will be sentenced up to 5 years of imprisonment.

For-profit distributors, too, will be sentenced up to 7 years, without the previous option of a monetary penalty. Civil servants will be excluded from government jobs with only one sexual crime commitment.

The announce plan also includes a support plan for the victims. The government is to offer support deleting illegally filmed videos, in addition to providing free legal services.
